Sacred Text Christianity

This is the first comprehensive study of the role of languages and texts in the Greco-Roman religions, including Judaism and Christianity. It explores bilingualism, language learning, literacy, book production and translation, as well as some of the more explicitly religious factors, including beliefs about language, missionary zeal, ritual, conservatism, and the power of the priestly establishment. By looking for parallel developments and common factors operating throughout the Roman Empire, Sacred Languages and Sacred Texts sheds new light on the role of the power of words, spoken and written, in religion.

Sacred text - Many religions and spiritual movements believe that their sacred texts (or scriptures) are the "Word of God", often feeling that the texts are wholly divine or spiritually inspired in origin. Even non-believers often capitalize the names of sacred scriptures as a mark of respect or tradition.

Revealed religion - A revealed religion is one which perceives a symbolic center in a set of revelations allegedly given by a deity, and often transcribed into a sacred text. Four prominent examples are Zoroastrianism, Christianity, Islam, and Judaism.

Yahshua - Yahshua is an attempted transliteration of the original Hebrew or Aramaic name of Jesus commonly used by individuals in the Sacred Name religious movement out of Christianity. Those who follow Sacred Name teachings (such as the Assemblies of Yahweh) believe that it is essential to salvation to use the correct pronunciation of the name of the one most Christians call "Jesus".
